A few weeks ago, high school students and teachers gathered in the auditorium to become the audience for a presentation that covers a very important issue in society - bullying. The main effort of the Sweethearts and Heroes crew is to make schools a happier and more welcoming environment for some students and overall decrease the act of bullying. Nationwide, reportedly 33% of students state that they have been bullied on various occasions throughout the school year. According to the statistics provided by Pacer.org, “Of those students who reported being bullied, 13% were made fun of, called names, or insulted; 12% were the subject of rumors; 5% were pushed, shoved, tripped, or spit on; and 5% were excluded from activities on purpose.” Because of this growing problem, the members of Sweethearts and Heroes put together a moving presentation that really opened the eyes of some students and faculty.
Their general message was for people to start speaking up. For every bullying case, there is almost always a bystander. Their presentation focused on the importance of bringing faith into the lives of those who feel hopeless and how to properly handle a situation of bullying. They left the students with purposeful acronyms, one of which was called “H.O.P.E.” This stands for “hold on, possibility exists.”
One of the speakers named Rick Yarosh also moved students and teachers with his story as a military hero and the struggles he had to overcome due to his injuries. He explained that although his situation seemed overwhelming and impossible to prevail over, his story demonstrates that there is always hope and possibilities for everyone.
Many students in Greenville felt quite moved and inspired by this impactful presentation and its essential meaning.
