Book Review of "One Night"

One Night by Margaret Wild is about a girl named Helen, who is known to be smart but is not on the prettiest side of the spectrum, and a boy named Gabe who is almost model-worthy but plays girls. The two meet at a party and they spend the night together. After that night, the story continues with Helen’s next step because it turns out she is pregnant. Gabe does not know about the pregnancy even though Helen tried calling him multiple times. He never answered and didn’t show any interest.
The book is left with Helen all alone because she decides to leave her house knowing her parents resent her. The struggle was resolved when Mrs. Evans started helping Helen a lot with what she has been going through. This is important because Mrs. Evans basically supports her through the whole pregnancy, even after birth. She only pays half the rent of the Boarding House they live in, and Mrs. Evans is happy to watch the baby when needed.
Helen became a lot stronger throughout the story. I think she gained more self worth and confidence. She was a very independent character throughout the story and it was clear that the pregnancy was really hard for her but she worked through it to reach better circumstances in her life. The novel was in verse, so the writing style was completely different than usual books I choose to read.
